IMO LG ELECTION ASPIRANTS PROTEST HIGH FEES

Aspirants for the April 27th local government and councillorship election in Imo State yesterday  protested the N50,000 charged for a leadership training to enable them run for  the forthcoming LG elections in the state.
The protesters in their numbers stormed the premises of the Imo State University Owerri (IMSU) where they were told to pay N50,000 each as tuition fee for the training before proceeding to the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) office for registration.
The ISIEC contracted IMSU for the leadership training and the money is demanded as prerequisite for participation in the April LG election in the state.
Addressing newsmen in Owerri yesterday during the protest, coordinator New Forum Aspirants Mr.Uche Duru expressed surprise at the  amount being charged for the training which he says has no constitutional backing.
He said that there is no rationale to pay such amount because the aspirants are out  to serve adding that if government starts extorting money from them, they will not be able to work effectively when they get to office.
