Actress Jessica Lange will reportedly be returning to Broadway
According to Reuters, the actress will star in a new version of the Eugene O’Neill play “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” Ms. Lange has previously appeared in such productions as “The Glass Menagerie” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” on the Great White Way.
The production of “Day” will open in April 2016 and, according to The New York Times, will be produced by Ryan Murphy, who co-created the FX series “American Horror Story” on which Lange starred for multiple seasons. According to the NYT, actors Gabriel Byrne, who was nominated for a Tony Award for his work in “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” and actor John Gallagher Jr., who won a Tony for his appearances in the musical “Spring Awakening,” will co-star.
Lange returns to a Broadway that is reportedly doing well financially. According to the BBC, Broadway just had its best season ever in terms of both revenue and audience figures and stars like Lange appearing in shows was most likely part of it. Actors Helen Mirren (who starred in “The Audience”), Bradley Cooper (who headed up “The Elephant Man”), and Hugh Jackman (of “The River”) were all there during the season.
And there were still plenty of old favorites for those who wanted to see them. “The Lion King,” which opened on Broadway in 1997, was the highest-grossing show, according to Deadline, and “The Phantom of the Opera” performed well also.
Deadline writer Jeremy Gerard also noted that more “dynamic pricing,” in which the cost of a ticket can change based on how popular it is, could have also contributed to the financial success of the season.
Other shows currently on Broadway include old successes like “Wicked” and “Mamma Mia!” as well as new and critically acclaimed productions like “Fun Home” and “Something Rotten!”
